As expected after the Orlando Night Club shooting, the first wave of gun control legislation has hit the floor of the Senate. On Monday evening all four of the following proposed amendments failed in procedural votes.
The first amendment presented by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) was to enhance funding for an existing background check system. The final vote was 53 to 47.
The second amendment was by Senator Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut), and called for the expansion of gun background checks and the closure of the “Gun Show Loophole.” The final vote was 44 to 56.
The third amendment presented by Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas), and supported by the National Rifle Association would have allowed for the government to delay a gun sale to a suspected terrorist for 72 hours, and require prosecutors to go to court and show probable cause to permanently block the sale to the individual in question. The final vote was 53 to 47.
The last amendment presented by Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-California) and endorsed by the Justice Department would have kept suspected terrorist and those on a government terrorist watch list from purchasing guns. The final vote was 47 to 53.
After all amendments failed to pass, Democrats instantly blamed Republicans for the voting outcome. Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) stated “It’s hard to believe, but still true, that our Republican colleagues voted to allow suspected terrorists to buy guns.”
