On Tuesday, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions recommended education reformer Betsy DeVos for the role of secretary of education.
Due to a party-line vote, DeVos has advanced toward closing in on securing the position.
However, DeVos is the first Trump cabinet appointee to receive zero Democratic votes at the committee level.
The philanthropist and supporter of school choice faced hard-hitting questions from Democrats regarding school funding, special education, and guns in school.
While the Democrats were critical of DeVos’ wealth, they still accepted massive amounts of money from teachers’ unions lobbying them to try to stop her.
Sen. Bernie Sanders was particularly critical of DeVos. He accused her of being unqualified for the position and even suggested she only acquired the nomination due to her family’s financial support of and donations given to the Republican Party.
Sanders: “I don’t mean to be rude, but do you think if you were not a multi-billionaire, if your family has [sic] not made hundreds of millions of dollars in contributions to the Republican Party, that you would be sitting here today?”
DeVos: “As a matter of fact, I do think that there would be that possibility. I have worked very hard on behalf of parents and children for the last, almost, 30 years.”
Others in opposition to DeVos include teachers’ unions, the National Education Association, and the American Federation of Teachers. These organizations have contributed roughly $740,000 in campaign donations to the opposing eleven Democrats in order to stop DeVos.
Sanders himself reportedly benefited the most, receiving a whopping $144,586 in donations from the teachers’ unions.
