Department of Homeland Security spokesman David Lapan told reporters Tuesday that, while they aren’t publicizing the details, some “additional vetting” policies are in place at U.S. borders.
Although the Trump administration’s broader “travel ban” has been put on hold by the courts, DHS officials say they currently have the authority to implement additional vetting procedures without alteration to the actual statute.
“We use algorithms to determine who might need additional screening,” said one DHS official regarding border crossings. Anyone traveling to the U.S. as a foreign national from overseas could be subjected to the vetting procedures.
Last week, the State Department announced new proposals meant to improve screening of certain visa applicants. Published as a notice in the Federal Register, the State Department is determining whether to require more information from certain applicants, including social media handles, five years worth of phone numbers and emails, and prior passport numbers. They may also ask for more detail regarding family, previous travel and employment.
President Trump’s edict regarding “extreme vetting” led to an attempt to implement restricted travel from several Muslim-majority countries. He issued an executive order addressing the restrictions he felt were necessary; however, a temporary injunction was ordered by federal courts. The dispute revolves around the order’s “country by country review ” in “Section Five.” Section Five says that individuals from certain countries may be subjected to additional scrutiny.
