The DHS Lost Thousands of Green Cards in the Last Three Years

It’s been confirmed by Inspector General’s report that the Department of Homeland Security that 19,000 green cards have “simply gone missing.” The mishandling of these cards is due to electronic system errors that have incorrectly issued duplicates or fabricated false information regarding names, dates of birth, photos and gender.

In 2016 alone, U.S. Customs and Immigration Services’ (USCIS), the homeland security agency which manages immigration benefits, inadvertently mailed out more than 6,000 duplicate Green Cards to applicants. Hundreds of green cards were also sent to the wrong addresses.

“It appears that thousands of Green Cards have simply gone missing. In the wrong hands, Green Cards may enable terrorists, criminals, and undocumented aliens to remain in the United States,” said DHS Inspector General Roth. “The problem was far worse than originally thought.”
