In his commencement speech at Brown University Sunday, Robert De Niro said that “in movie terms,” the United States was once “an inspiring uplifting drama” but now has turned into “a tragic dumbass comedy.”
De Niro, a two-time Oscar-winning actor, spoke to the Ivy League graduates, urging them to “work to stop the insanity” and to strive to make the world better.
Brown University awarded De Niro an honorary doctorate of fine arts.
Another honorary degree recipient at the ceremony was actor and rapper Daveed Diggs, who won a Tony Award for his role in “Hamilton.” Diggs assured the graduates that America needs their new ideas “because the old ones have made a mess of things.”
