Dismembered heads found in cooler near Mexico tourist zone

A grisly discovery south of the border has one resort town on edge. Authorities in Mexico’s Baja California Sur state have reported two heads were found in a cooler, only two blocks from Cabo San Lucas, a tourist hot spot.

The heads aren’t the only dismembered body parts to be found in recent months. Two completely dismembered bodies were found in another cooler Sunday, also along the tourist corridor, according to the state prosecutor’s office.

Altogether, the State prosecutors have uncovered a total of 18 bodies, 5 women and 13 men, in 12 graves between the Cabo Pulmo nature reserve and the resort of San Jose del Cabo. The bodies were found over several days of excavation, discovered off a road that runs between the reserve and the resort.

The killings are believed to be tied to drugs, the result of battles between gangs including factions of the Sinaloa cartel. Los Cabos, which includes the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, has seen 144 murders between January and April, five times greater than the number reported last year, according to government data.
The Baja California Sur state prosecutors office said they are using DNA tests to identify the remains they discover.
