On Thursday’s Walk & Talk, Dennis Michael Lynch once again addressed the lack of respect the NFL is showing for the United States and the military by marginalizing the meaning behind showing respect for the American flag.
DML showcased the American flag that flies at his own home, explaining that the same pole his flag flies on today originated at his previous home, a familiar “beacon” in that neighborhood that he brought to his treasured family home on Long Island.
DML said the reason he has spent so much time covering stories about those who choose to withdraw from honoring the flag is that the flag is a source of pride for Americans, including service members who sacrificed for what it symbolizes. Despite economic hardships or political leanings, Americans have usually been united behind the flag, he explained.
“Americans are proud of that flag,” Lynch asserted. “Because the sacrifices that have been made for that flag – that continue to be made for that flag – are immeasurable.”
Lynch cautioned that Americans shouldn’t let NFL stars, or celebrities like Spike Lee, dictate cultural norms, such as disrespecting the flag.
“In the same way that we should always be on our toes about terrorism, in the same way that we shouldn’t accept the fact that people cross our borders and overstay visas, and take advantage of our immigration system,” he said, “we shouldn’t let people take advantage of what that flag stands for.”
Lynch warned that with a children’s football league deciding to stop playing the National Anthem, and with athletes from differing sports – along with members of Congress – “taking a knee,” the behavior is going to get worse.
Feeling that he had to do something to fight back against it, Lynch launched a bumper sticker movement on Wednesday night. The bumper sticker is a rejection of the false narrative that kneeling during the anthem “isn’t a slap in the face to those who love, defend, and honor the flag.”
You can see Lynch’s impassioned plea to maintain a national respect for the flag in the video below. Please share it and remind all Americans not to become complacent about this troubling and disrespectful trend.
