When it comes to the healthcare bill being pushed by the president and Paul Ryan, your head is probably spinning.
If you’re a Trump supporter, odds are you’re caught between a rock and a hard place. You want to support the president, but you don’t trust Paul Ryan and the GOP establishment. Plus, you’re concerned about the costs — you’ve heard the reports — this bill doesn’t lower premiums and deductibles.
For the past few weeks, I have been pounding the alarm button… “The bill is no good! It’s a doubling down of Obamacare. ”
I was seriously hoping the president would not support this bill. But as of now, my hopes are lost. President Trump was on Capital Hill today pushing hard for the bill to pass.
We’ve received a lot of emails this week from people who support the president, but they are beginning to question his judgement. They cannot understand why he is pushing this terrible bill and trusting Paul Ryan. Meanwhile, the president told GOP lawmakers today that if they do not support the bill, odds are they will lose their seats in 2018. I disagree. I say it’s just the opposite. Anyone who supports this bill is sure to lose his or her seat.
The current bill by Ryan is “phase 1” of a “3 phase” plan. Keep that in mind as you consider the following:
If this bill passes, and the program fails to lower premiums, come 2018 the Democrats will win more seats than they hold now in both the House and Senate. If that happens, “phase 2” and “phase 3” of the plan will never be implemented down the road. Democrats will not vote for President Trump’s bill. To believe otherwise is blatant denial. Therefore, phase 1 will be the law. It will be a disaster, and it will be called “Trumpcare.”
Months ago, I suggested tax reform was the best thing to do first — I thought the president couldn’t lose if he put money in EVERYONE’S pocket. But that suggestion went on deaf ears. Now we sit here with a terrible bill for healthcare — and if it does not pass it will make tax reform more difficult. The president should just walk away from this bill immediately.
I think the best thing to do is to step back, allow Obamacare to continue to slide into the abyss, and then step in when it’s on life support.
To push through Ryan’s plan this quickly makes no sense — it’s dangerous actually. Case in point, look what happened with the first travel ban. It was done too quickly and poorly, it was a total disaster.
Edmund F. Haislmaier, from the Heritage Foundation, is an expert in health care policy. His concerns are the same as mine. He writes, “The key problem with the draft House health care bill is that it fails to correct the features of Obamacare that drove up health insurance costs. Instead, it mainly tweaks Obamacare’s financing and subsidy structure.”
Basically, the bill focuses on protecting those who gained subsidized coverage through the law’s exchange subsidies and Medicaid expansion, while failing to correct Obamacare’s misguided insurance regulations that drove up premiums for Americans buying coverage without government subsidies.
That is both a policy problem and a political problem.”
TO BREAK THIS DOWN FOR YOU, lets look at the numbers:
– Currently, 22 million people receive health coverage that is largely subsidized by the U.S. government. About 8 million of these people use the health care exchanges, while Medicaid expansion services account for the other 14 million.
– Then there are the 25 million people who get no subsidy. This is made up of individuals and small-employer plans. Obamacare is killing them financially. The Ryan bill does not help this group.
In short, this bill does not fill the promises made during the 2016 campaign season.
If you’re really interested in understanding more, I urge you to read Haislmaier’s article on the Heritage website.
