Today is July 2, and here are the stories I am watching.
1-Sen. Bernie Sanders captured more online conversation than any other Democratic candidate last week.
Following his proposal to wipe out $1.6 trillion in student debt, it shows that topics that got outsized media attention weren’t the ones that animated people most. Articles about Sanders generated 5.7 million interactions (likes, comments and shares) on Facebook and Twitter over the last week — 64% more than those about Joe Biden, who came in second. Sen. Kamala Harris generated more interactions on debate day and the day after than any other candidate — but those numbers were still 16% shy of Bernie, who introduced college-debt legislation two days before the first debate.
DML: It’s amazing how well the promise of FREE stuff tickles Democratic brains.
2-U.S. pride has hit its lowest point since Gallup first asked the question in 2001: 70% of U.S. adults say they’re proud to be Americans; fewer than half (45%) are “extremely” proud. Democrats continue to lag far behind Republicans in expressing extreme pride in the U.S.,” Gallup reports.
DML: Keep shipping in those cheap laborers!
3-The Dems on the move in 2020: Sens. Kamala Harris (up 9 points) and Elizabeth Warren (up 8 points) made steep gains after the debate, a new CNN poll by SSRS shows, with Joe Biden’s lead shrinking to 5 points. As for Pete Buttigieg: “Through the first two fund-raising quarters, no other Democratic presidential candidate has married traditional high-dollar fund-raising with online small donations as successfully,” states the NY TIMES. Mayor Pete raised more than $20M this last quarter. Meanwhile, former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper’s campaign manager Brad Komar and national finance director Dan Sorenson have left the campaign. Spokeswoman Lauren Hitt said she, too, will exit in the coming weeks.
DML: This Mayor Pete guy is going to cause problems for Dems. He actually may rise to #1.
4-Cory Booker unveils plan to ‘virtually eliminate immigrant detention’
Sen. Cory Booker, trying to jolt his 2020 presidential campaign, is unveiling a comprehensive plan to “virtually eliminate immigrant detention” and expand protections for illegal immigrants through executive order — bypassing Congress entirely — “on day one of his presidency.”
DML: I have a better announcement that has a better chance of coming true. When I am announced starting QB for the New York Giants I will pass the ball only to the wide receivers who are illegal aliens.
5-Nike dropped Betsy Ross-themed Fourth of July sneaker after Colin Kaepernick complained
Just don’t do it. That was the message ex-NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick delivered to Nike over the planned release of a USA-themed sneaker, which featured a Betsy Ross flag on the heel, according to a report. Nike nixed the released of the Air Max 1 USA after having already sent the sneakers to retailers because the protesting quarterback said he felt the use of the Betsy Ross flag was offensive and carried slavery connotations, sources told The Wall Street Journal.
DML: If you don’t fight back with a bumper sticker that declares I STAND FOR MY FLAG, then I am questioning why I am spending my mornings writing briefings.
