The attack on conservative news media has just escalated to a new level.
Thursday, Facebook announced that it has introduced major changes to the kinds of posts, videos and photos that users will see most often, in an effort to prioritize what friends and family share and comment on, while de-emphasizing content from publishers and brands.
Said to be “the most significant overhaul in years to Facebook’s News Feed,” users can expect to see fewer viral videos and news articles shared by media companies. Instead, Facebook will highlight posts that friends have interacted with, such as anniversary updates and photos of dogs and kids, and said it will help people have “more meaningful interactions.”
Americans who depend on social media to access news about issues that concern them, instead of simply communicating with family and sharing pet photos, are frustrated over the crackdown.
The move will also hurt news publishers, small businesses and nonprofits, who rely on social media to reach people. Specifically, the new approach Facebook has announced will prevent most news articles from ever reaching a user’s news feed.
