I met Reince Priebus a few years ago at the March For Life Rally in Washington DC. Soft spoken, very friendly, modest — that’s my impression of the former chief of staff (COS).
Priebus handed over his resignation to the president Thursday night after a blistering set of insults about him were made by White House Communications Director, Anthony Scaramucci .
The comments were made to a liberal writer Wednesday evening. The writer then published the nasty remarks in The New Yorker on Thursday afternoon.
Priebus was immediately replaced today by DHS Sec. Kelly who takes over the new role Monday.
Let me say I never thought Priebus was a good choice for COS. But he ain’t the cause of all the problems.
Priebus was supposed to bridge the gap between Trump and GOP lawmakers. But it never happened, and it never will happen because Trump doesn’t operate like presidents of the past. His style is like nothing we’ve ever seen before. Although you may deem his style refreshing, for GOP lawmakers it’s too much too fast, and that’s why there is no bridge — that’s why healthcare is dead.
Everyone points to the White House leaks as the reason why Priebus had to go. But the leaks are not preventing healthcare from passing.
You read it here first… Pushing Priebus out of the White House is not a good thing, it’s not a bad thing, it’s meaningless because it changes absolutely nothing.
After six months there is no bridge between the Capital and the White House because of Trump, Rep. Ryan and Sen. McConnell. Until the three of those guys get their stars aligned this presidency is dead in the water.
That said, how I feel about General Kelly being hired for COS…
Trump loves retired generals. He treats them differently; he speaks about them differently. He respects them in the same way a son respects his father. Personally, I think that’s because retired generals remind Trump of his own father — but that’s an analysis for another day.
Trump tells everyone how great his presidency is going, but deep down Trump knows his train is not exactly on the tracks. Otherwise, Scaramucci would still be a Fox commentator, and Priebus would be the COS.
Trump is racking up a lot of little wins here and there, but he has no major legislation to show, and there is nothing on the horizon. The GOP is a total nightmare from top to bottom.
In Trump’s mind, fixing the White House leaks are everything. But lets be honest, leaks about Trump’s dinner plans with Sean Hannity aren’t causing healthcare not to pass.
No doubt, having General Kelly as COS is much better than having Priebus in the sense he carries a big stick, and there will be more disciplines in place. But the leaks will not stop. People talk to the press. It’s that simple.
Looking beyond the leaks, I wish Trump didn’t pick General Kelly. Why take the general off the border? We need him at DHS. Illegal immigration is the biggest threat to this country and it’s the one place where Trump’s policies are really taking shape — Kelly is kicking butt and taking names at the border — and there is still so much work to do.
The DHS suffered through 8 years of pure hell under Obama, and just when Sec. Kelly is getting everything under control and working correctly, Trump pulls him off the line to manage the White House staff? I hate this idea.
I’ll take back my words if Kelly can get Ryan and McConnell to meet with Trump for 3 days straight to hash out healthcare. I’ll be super impressed if he gets the president to stop tweeting negative remarks about Jeff Sessions. I’ll be thankful if he puts a sock in Scaramucci. Sadly, odds are we’ll only get one of the three (Scaramucci).
Please don’t get your hopes up too high with this new change. The issues with Trump’s presidency aren’t because of Preibus.
In short, we just took one of our best hitters and asked him to coach the team instead of being on the field.
Ridding of Priebus, no biggie. Moving Kelly off the line, that’s a mistake. I wish Trump found another person.
