Senators Ron Johnson (WI) and James Lankford (Okla.) introduced an amendment Wednesday to end Columbus Day’s inclusion as a federal holiday and replace it with a new holiday – Juneteenth. The two senators shocked conservatives with the proposition, which would be tacked on to a bill introduced by another senator: John Cornyn (R-Texas). Cornyn’s bill would make Juneteenth a federal holiday.

Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union Gen. Gordon Granger informed enslaved African-Americans in Texas of their freedom. “General Granger’s announcement put into effect the Emancipation Proclamation,” the New York Times explains, “which had been issued more than two and a half years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863, by President Abraham Lincoln.” It has been celebrated by African-Americans since the late 1800s.

In our Thursday poll, we asked: “Do you support the bill Republican senators have introduced about Columbus Day?” A whopping 94% of respondents said, “No, I do not support it!”  See the results below.

  1. I guess all Americans besides Black should take their lead and burn down everything cursing through every video and making demands because bad behavior is sure working for them. But not if it wasn’t for the Democrats that allow it. They will answer to God because he is against every Thing they Stand for

  2. Juneteenth has always been celebrated in Texas. It celebrates the day slaves in Texas were informed they were free. The Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves was 2 1/2 years earlier and falls on New Year’s day. Seems these senators don’t want the actual date celebrated because it would compete with New Years celebrations, sounds racist to me.

  3. These politicians need to give up so much more really! All these paid holidays for one ! All the free time off, and paid time for walking out of meetings especially with the President !!! This is where money can be saved .

  4. I exchanged emails with Ron Johnson and listened to his reasoning on WISN conservative radio in WI. He attempted to slow this decision down. He is trying to save the taxpayers from paying federal workers for another federal holiday. So by cutting back on one federal holiday it wouldn’t cost the taxpayers the exorbitant amt. it does for one holiday, much less two. Tucker Carlson jumped the gun on this one. He invited Senator Johnson to be on his show, but he was not able to make it that night.

    • We already know that. Leave Columbus Day alone. Make it a local decision whether or not to celebrate it and pay the workers.

  5. Elliott above knows his history. If texas wants june 19th to be a holiday, so be it. But why the rest of the country? It wasnt their day.

  6. To hell with Juneteenth, bye the correct pronunciation is not Juneteenth, how does June 19th sound. I hate Lincoln admin. And everything they did. I do not like Robert e lee, lee should have never surrendered. He should have fought the scum bag ignorant yankee till they were gone for good. These Yankees still give America shit the founders would see as economic oppression. I wish the southern confederate states had seen what Sherman was really up too, I hope they can see from the grave what the stinking results are now that they decided not to fight dirty. Being a southern gentleman hurt their great, great grandkids terribly bad. If the south had won slavery would have disappeared peacefully and no racism would exist to the extent it did after the war. Slaves were loved in most cases, they were given clean, warm shelter, they were given medical attention, they were fed well. It was the owners responsibility to make sure slaves remained healthy otherwise they would not be able to produce a days work. It’s not like the fictional stories the yankee media portrays. If slavery had been allowed to disappear on its on there would have been virtually no racism however today racism is a huge part of the black race culture, they hate and blame almighty whitey for every screw up they make. It’s causing more and more anger therefore if it’s revolution they want, I say let it begin with suburbia.
