If the president wants to keep a lot of his firm supporters firm, especially those who have microphones, then he needs to kill a developing story real fast. I’m referring to the story from the NY Times on Monday night claiming the president is losing confidence in Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Now, considering this story appeared first in a NY Times article, we all must take into account the lack of credibility that comes with a story stemming from a liberal news outlet filled with “journalists” who publish attacks using unnamed sources.
However, when given the chance to drench the fire-breathing article with a bucket of cold water, White House press secretary Sean Spicer left the bucket on the ground Tuesday.
During the White House press briefing, Spicer was asked if the president remains confident in the former senator from Alabama. Spicer said he had not discussed the matter with the president, thus, leaving the media lots of room to run with a narrative that claims a problem is brewing.
Keep in mind that not long ago, Spicer was asked the same question about the president and Jared Kushner. Spicer wasted no time knocking down the story by reaffirming the president’s confidence in his son-in-law.
The president is never shy when it comes to tweeting what’s on his mind. Therefore, considering the Trump administration is bruised and tired after months of leaks and media bashing, there is no good reason to allow this story to grow into something that it’s not.
A.G. Sessions does not need to be put in a place where he is second guessing his own job security. Thus, the president should pick up the bucket left by Spicer and dump it all over this story via his favorite channel of communication… Twitter. He needs to do it today, in my opinion.
If President Trump does not support Sessions, and if he allows this story to grow like a cancer, then he needs to realize the likelihood of what happens next. Odds are there will be a very long line of conservative pundits, media outlets and immigration hawks who will begin to sour on the president. Maybe not all at once, and maybe not even tomorrow, but it will happen in time.
A little reminder to the White House. We can all point the blame at whoever we think deserves it most, but one thing is for certain… unfortunately, the foundation in this administration shows signs of cracking. It is my contention that the only thing keeping it from opening like a sinkhole is the Trump support base. When that goes, it’s game over.
Disrespecting Jeff Sessions is like the NY Yankees mistreating Derek Jeter or Mickey Mantle (depending on your generation). It ain’t gonna fly with the fans. Lets hope the tweet goes out real soon.
How would you describe the President’s level of confidence in AG Sessions?
