Doctors in Europe are working toward womb transplants for men

A new procedure could make it possible to transplant a womb into the body of biological males, paving the way for men to deliver children. Successful operations pioneered at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden on womb-less women set the stage for an attempt with men, and the procedure could be ready within 10-years.

National Health Service (NHS), the publicly funded national healthcare system for England, Scotland and Wales, is being urged by activists to make womb transplants an option for male-born transgender people, Breitbart reported.

Some doctors agree, including Dr. Arianna D’Angelo, a Consultant Gynaecologist at NHS’s Wales Fertility Institute. According to the Daily Mail, she said, “We already have fertility preservation for transgender people, to give them the possibility to have their own genetic child. So I don’t see much of a difference between that and actually delivering their own child.”

Another supporter is Dr. Francoise Shelfield from the University College London, who has been treating infertile patients for 30 years. Speaking to the possibility of a male womb and referencing the UK’s equality laws, she reportedly said, “If we are saying we should have equality and we have legislation [defending the rights of transgender people], I do not see why not.”

The successful implementation of such a program may even be publicly funded, if efforts by some activists are successful. Amel Alghrani, director of Liverpool University’s Health Law & Regulation Unit, is pushing to make the procedure publicly funded, saying all men, whether homosexual, trans or straight, may want to bear children, and such an offering would “revolutionize reproduction.”

“Homosexual couples may also wish to procreate in this fashion, while single men may opt for it to avoid surrogacy,” Alghrani said.

Women’s campaigner Laura Perrins, the co-editor of the Conservative Woman, says, “Most taxpayers will not think this is a good use of resources. It raises profound ethical and moral issues that will have an impact on women’s rights.”

Perrins said that a womb transplant program for men “will impinge on the meaning of motherhood and womanhood”.
