Film accused increasing Islamophobia.
Trevor Phillips, the former head of Britain’s Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), released a one-hour documentary titled “What Muslims Really Think”, on April 13. It was watched by 1.4 million viewers on the UK station, Channel 4, and has drawn more than 200 complaints.
Following the terror attacks in Paris and Brussels, Phillips wanted to get a better understanding of the views of British Muslims and to try to comprehend why some young Muslims are being drawn to violence. So, Phillips conducted a poll that found more than half of British Muslims think homosexuality should be illegal, 39 percent believed women should always obey their husbands and 23 percent said Islamic sharia law should apply in areas with high Muslim populations.
The complaints were sparked from the poll, and from the program, accusing the documentary of presenting misleading information and accusing it of increasing Islamophobia. However, the film presented evidence showing that Muslim immigrants are NOT integrating nor blending in with the culture and communities where they migrate to, but are retaining their extremist Islamic customs. A spokeswoman for Channel 4 said: “Channel 4 stands by the integrity of the program and the survey on which it was based.”
