Don Jr. releases emails after NY TIMES puts out a portion of email exchange

The New York Times is slowly rolling out the headline grabbing story about Don Trump Jr. and his meeting with a Russian lawyer who he believed had dirt on Hillary Clinton last summer.  This morning they released portions of an email exchange between Don Jr. and the person who set up the meeting.  I believe they are doing this sort of “drip drip” reporting in an attempt to trip up Don Jr.

Late Tuesday morning, The New York Times (NYT) published excerpts of the email exchange from June 3, 2016.  The NYT claimed that one of President Trump’s former Russian business partners “had been contacted by a senior Russian government official and was offering to provide the Trump campaign with dirt on Hillary Clinton.”

NYT quotes the email as saying, “[the documents] would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father.”  The email, which the NYT says was written by a trusted intermediary, included this sentence: “This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump.”

The NYT claims that Don Jr. replied within minutes: “If it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer.”

Then the NYT is claiming that additional emails were exchanged over a 4-day period. Eventually, the intermediary suggested there be a meeting in NYC between Don Jr. and a “Russian government attorney.”

The NYT claims that Don Jr. agreed to the meeting and said he’d want to add Kushner and Manafort.   The meeting took place on June 9, 2016.

The NYT writes the following about the importance of the emails:
“The email exchanges, which were reviewed by The Times, offer a detailed unspooling of how the meeting with the Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, came about — and just how eager Donald J. Trump was to accept what he was explicitly told was the Russian government’s help.”

Moments later, Don Jr. released the emails in full.  You can see it below.

The full email chain can be viewed on Don Jr’s Twitter page, but the document needs to be clicked and it’s hard to read unless you zoom in.
