President Donald Trump received a very gracious compliment from an unlikely source on the most unlikeliest of platforms on Wednesday.
Jeh Johnson, who served as the Secretary of Homeland Security in the Obama administration, appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and profoundly stated that Trump has the “potential to be a great president.”
Johnson gave his former boss’s successor accolades but also some constructive criticism.
“I actually believe that Donald Trump–and I told him this when I met with him in December–I actually believe that Donald Trump has the potential to be a great president in sort of the Nixon-goes-to-China way, or Reagan-goes-to-the-Soviet-Union way, if he can find a way to rein in some of the more unhealthy impulses, listen to his staff, bring on a full complement of political appointees who will help him govern,” Johnson told panelist Katty Kay.
Trump’s frequent use of Twitter was what Johnson clarified as being an “unhealthy impulse.”
Another important point that Johnson brought up was that we as a nation need to be extremely wary of extremists who were born in the United States.
“DHS was created on the assumption that terrorism was something that would penetrate our borders,” he said. “Now because ISIL has effectively outsourced terrorism to homegrown violent extremists, we need to focus on there, as well.”
In regards to the new emergency order banning certain electronics on carry-on luggage from a number of countries, Johnson was in agreement and said that the potential for explosives being hidden in these types of devices has been a concern of DHS for quite some time and that the United Kingdom is following suit with the ban.
