Montana’s GOP House candidate Greg Gianforte was prominent in Thursday’s news cycle after he was charged with misdemeanor assault on Wednesday for allegedly “body slamming” The Guardian journalist Ben Jacobs. Although President Donald Trump has not personally visited Montana to show support for the candidate looking to fill Montana’s only House seat, he did show support for Gianforte with a robocall, calling him a “wonderful guy” and “my friend.”
Donald Trump Jr. did travel to Montana to stump for Gianforte, twice. Trump Jr.’s first trip was in April. While there, he went hunting with Gianforte and Senator Steve Daines, Montana’s Republican U.S. Senator.
In a Tweet sent out by Daines, the three are pictured seated around a table with the caption: “Grabbing dinner in Ingomar, MT at the Jersey Lilly with @DonaldJTrumpJr and @GregForMontana #beansoup.”

Earlier this month, Trump Jr. went back to Montana. He gave a speech that compared Gianforte to his father. He said that Gianforte is a businessman with no prior political experience.
“He doesn’t need this job. Just like my father didn’t need this job,” said Trump Jr. “He wants this job because he loves this country. He wants this job because he loves this state.”
Vice President Mike Pence recorded a robocall in support of Gianforte, but he also made a trip to Montana on May 12. During that rally, Pence said, “We need more allies in Congress to make America great again, and we need Greg Gianforte.”
Daines, for his part, issued a statement after Gianforte was charged in the alleged assault on Jacobs. “I have confidence in local law enforcement,” Daines wrote. “I do know Greg Gianforte has been charged with misdemeanor assault and will leave the questions and answers to local law enforcement. I do not condone violence in any way.”
The House seat race will be decided Thursday, as Montana voters choose between Gianforte or Democrat Rob Quist.
