The incoming Chief of Staff, Reince Priebus, sits with Chuck Todd of NBC’s, Meet the Press, for a contentious interview about the rumors of Russian hackers and the recent election.
Priebus visited Meet the Press to discuss potential secretary of state pick Rex Tillerson. But when the conversation shifted from Tillerson to the claims of Russian hacking hitting the election, specifically the RNC, Priebus wasted no time setting the record straight.
Todd asked, “Not a single person connected to the RNC was hacked, no Republican vendor who had interactions with the RNC network were hacked? You guys have had a very specific denial that the RNC’s network wasn’t hacked doesn’t mean Republicans associated with the RNC weren’t hacked – that doesn’t rule that out.”
Priebus shot back, “I don’t know why you are so hot about this. I mean, the fact of the matter is you should actually be happy that the RNC wasn’t hacked. The RNC was not hacked, Chuck.”
He continued, “The RNC was not hacked, Chuck, and I don’t know of any employee who’s own Gmail account that was hacked,” he asserted. “I am refuting the specific fact that was made in the article that created this entire firestorm,” Priebus said, referring to an article by the New York Times that specifically claimed that the RNC was hacked.
Priebus went on to press Todd about why the media would run a story that had no credibility and was not true.
“The CIA has made this assessment,” Todd replied. Referencing President-elect’s dismissal of the claims made by the CIA, Todd then asked if he believed that Russia was involved.
As the interview continued, Priebus challenged Todd to name one single source that can confirm the RNC was hacked by Russian agents.
Without providing an answer, Todd dismisses the question saying, “My question is not about the RNC. My question is about whether or not Russia tried to infiltrate our election in some way shape or form.”
Todd continued his question, “You don’t and Donald Trump doesn’t believe that Russia was involved in that at all?”
“What I’m asking you, Chuck, tell me what the specific source that you have, other than the New York Times article. What source are you using to be so adamant to get a response from me? What’s your source?” Priebus exclaimed.
Todd continued to press Priebus, “Do you believe, let’s just clear this up, does the president-elect believe that Russia was trying to muddy up, get involved in the election in 2016?”
“Number one, you don’t know it, I don’t know it, and there has been no conclusive or specific report to say otherwise. The second thing I would tell you is that you don’t have any proof that the outcome of the election was changed, forget about who did the hacking, if someone did the hacking.”
Before Todd shut him off, Priebus stated that the main concern should be that hacking took place at all and that the “who” of it shouldn’t be the main focus of the issue.
