After his surprising win in Alabama on Tuesday, Senator-elect Doug Jones (D) said he had “a very gracious” phone call with President Donald J. Trump on Wednesday, and that he’d been invited to visit the White House.
“It was a very gracious call,” Jones reported. “I very much appreciate it. He congratulated me on the race that we won. He congratulated me and my staff on the manner in which we handled this campaign and went forward. And we talked about finding that common ground, to work together.”
Speaking during a news conference in Alabama (see video below), Jones said he also received phone calls from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Senator Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.).
Sen. Luther Strange (R-Ala.), who is the special appointee currently occupying the seat Jones won, also placed a congratulatory call.
Jones reported that all callers were “very gracious” and that they were “congratulating us on the way we have run this race, the way we portrayed ourself (sic) and the campaign.” He said all expressed “a desire to look forward together to try to work for the betterment of the state of Alabama and this country.”
Jones said all of the calls were in the spirit of working together, “to try to find common ground so that we can move forward.”
Jones reports that his Republican opponent in the race, Roy Moore, has not called him. Moore still has not conceded defeat to Jones, despite a difference of 20,000 votes with all precincts reporting.
“After elections, it’s a time for healing,” Jones said. “It’s a time for reaching out. That’s what I intend to do once I can be sworn in. I think that as most people, including the president, believe that the people of Alabama spoke.”
The election loss was bitter for Republicans, who had not lost a Senate seat to a Democrat in 25-years.
