On Thursday, an unidentified French citizen attempted to speed his car into a shopping area while armed with knives and other weapons in his vehicle.  He was later arrested.

The situation occurred in the late morning on the De Meir shopping street of Antwerp, Belgium. It happened just one day after a driver killed multiple people in London before being fatally wounded by authorities.

According to Belgian police, the driver entered the street “at high speed due to which pedestrians had to jump away.”

French President Francois Hollande also commented that the driver “was looking to kill or at the very least create a dramatic incident.”

Hollande’s full commentary on the event follows:

“It seemed to involve a French national, with possibly a certain number of weapons in his [trunk] — it’s up to the judges to make a statement on that — who was looking to kill or at the very least create a dramatic incident. Therefore, we must continue to be on high alert.”

Belgian police have instituted additional personnel and military units to secure the region of Antwerp following the incident.
