A drug dealer who was granted clemency as part of former President Obama’s push to release non-violent drug offenders has been busted again for the very same violation.
Daron Benjamin Swygert, 43, of Richland County, South Carolina, was originally arrested for possessing with intent to distribute cocaine, and in 2001 he was given 240 months in prison, along with 10 years of supervised release.
In December 2015, Swygert was included in a group of 95 “non-violent offenders” whose sentences were commuted by Obama, setting him free on April 16, 2016.
The Obama administration claimed that the criminal justice system had resulted in “overly harsh and expensive sentences for thousands of drug offenders.”
Unfortunately, once Swygert was set free, he returned right back to his previous lifestyle.
A report published Thursday by WISTV revealed that after a 6-month investigation resulting from an anonymous tip received by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, Swygert was arrested again on July 24, 2017 and charged with trafficking crack cocaine. It was reportedly his third offense.
After several warrants had been issued for his arrest, deputies finally spotted Swygert and pulled him over, and found several pieces of crack cocaine hidden in his pants.
The sheriff’s report said Swygert finally admitted he had been using and selling crack cocaine.
After 15 months of freedom granted by Obama, Swygert is now reportedly back behind bars.
