An auto accident claimed the life of a six-year-old boy Sunday morning in Phoenix, after an illegal alien ran a red light.
German Valdemar Godinez-Godinez, 19, a citizen of Guatemala, is in the United States illegally, and admitted he had drank a small bottle of whiskey, 12 beers and used cocaine three times during the period of 4:30 pm Saturday to 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
He claimed he did not see the traffic light because his visor was down. Driving a Dodge pickup, Godinez ran the red light and hit a Ford Ranger pickup. News reports say the Ford pick had two adults were seated inside, with a 2-year-old child sitting on the lap of the passenger. Three other children were in the bed of the pickup and were thrown out of the vehicle.
Six-year-old Tyrik Jenkins, one of the children in the back of the pickup, was killed.
Godinez is being held on a $250,000 cash-only bond, and faces one count of manslaughter and five counts of endangerment, according to CBS5 News. He is considered a flight risk, as he still has family in Guatemala.
During an interview Monday night at the jail, Godinez claimed he had entered the U.S. on a tourist visa and stayed after it expired. He also claimed that family problems from his childhood led him to drink, saying, “I felt sad because my whole life I had never met my dad.”
“I feel bad for what I did. I hope the family forgives me,” Godinez said. “I never planned to hurt anyone or do this.”
ABC News reported that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plans to assume custody of Godinez once he is released from state custody. ABC said ICE denied he was illegal, but would not elaborate on the matter.
