Education Association Launches Protests Against Trump

The National Education Association is asking its students and teachers to protest against Donald Trump’s presidency by skipping school on Thursday.

In what they are calling a “National Day of Action,” the NEA said, “On Thursday, January 19, the day before Donald Trump assumes the presidency, thousands of students, parents, educators and community members from across the nation will hold rallies in front of school buildings to inclusively stand up for all students.”

NEA president Lily Eskelsen García will join the protest efforts in Los Angeles and Las Cruces, NM.

The protests, which are being organized by the Alliance to Reclaim our Schools (AROS), are to aid schools in protecting “the things we care about.”

The AROS website outlines the details of their efforts:

— A rally at a school, or district offices calling for more investment in public education.

— Actions targeting billionaires or corporations that receive tax breaks from the city and deny public schools the revenues they need to be successful.

— A group meeting with your U.S. Senator to demand that he/she vote NO on the nomination of billionaire Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education.

— “Walk-ins” at local schools around the city in the morning in support of public education.

— Visits to / rallies at the offices of state legislators or members of Congress to demand full investment in public education and ask them to vote NO on vouchers and charter expansion.

The NEA went on to clarify in a statement that the protests aren’t just to show disdain for Trump’s education plans, but also to show their lack of support for his Secretary of Education pick, Betsy DeVos.

“The rhetoric and ideology of Trump and Secretary of Education nominee Betsy DeVos are deeply troubling. Trump’s own words, and the stances his nominees have taken, suggest that his administration will target immigrants, people of color, women, the LGBTQ community, American Muslims, educators, working families, the labor movement, and others in ways that further divide America and fan resentment,” it said.

“January 19th is a moment to come together, each in our own communities, on a single day, with a single message to Donald Trump and Betsy DeVos. Let’s join together to protect the things we care about and fight for what we want. Resistance is rising!” stated AROS.
