Electoral Twist: 4 State Electors Go Rogue – Against Clinton

Over the last few days, many have speculated if Republican electors would switch their obligated votes for President-elect Donald Trump to another candidate as retaliation. In a surprising twist however, as votes Monday have been counted, four of the twelve Washington state Democratic electors have actually protested and changed their intended voters for Hillary Clinton to a different candidate.

Three of the electors instead casted votes for former Secretary of State Colin Powell. The other one voted for Faith Spotted Eagle, a Native American elder from South Dakota. This is the first time in four decades the state’s electors have broken off from the popular vote for president.

The previous time an elector broke from the popular vote in this state was back in 1976. The rogue elector was Mike Padden, a current Republican state senator. Padden casted a vote for Ronald Reagan instead of Gerald Ford, who had won the popular vote in the state.

Only two Republican electors from Texas rejected their votes for Trump. Regardless, Trump still easily surpassed 270 votes to continue on as the awarded President-elect.
