Rumors are flying that Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy may be thinking about retirement, after a reunion event for his staffers was unexpectedly moved up a year.

Gossip that the 80-year-old justice may retire has brewed for months, but became intensified this week after George Washington University law professor Orrin Kerr, a former Kennedy clerk, tweeted: “Soon we’ll know if rumors of Kennedy’s retirement are accurate.”

Kerr has since walked back his statements slightly, saying he was merely speculating. But little has surfaced to deter speculation.

Another vacancy on the Supreme Court would surely spark intense conflict on Capitol Hill, and have the potential to significantly shift the balance in the legal body for years to come.
