The New York Times issued a report on Saturday revealing that Donald Trump Jr., senior adviser Jared Kushner, and former campaign manager Paul Manafort met with a Russian lawyer with ties to the Kremlin in June 2016. Don Jr. admitted to the meeting, but issued a statement to the Times claiming the meeting had nothing to do with the 2016 campaign in the sense that no meaningful information was shared.

Up until recently, the meeting had never been disclosed. The liberal media is taking the story as the next phase in the Russian collusion narrative that is designed to destroy the Trump presidency.

According to Don Jr., the meeting was about the Magnitsky Act and adoption of children and was set up by a friend. The Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, has made a name for herself in attacking the Magnitsky Acts, which is a U.S. law that blacklists Russian authorities for various human rights wrongdoings. President Putin was so outraged by this law, that he discontinued programs that enabled Americans to adopt Russian children.  According to Don Jr., the crux of the meeting was about the Magnitsky Act.

All day Sunday, the leftist media has had a field day with this story, claiming the meeting went beyond the description by the president’s son. In fact, the mainstream media is reporting that the meeting was set up solely to gain compromising information on Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton during the campaign.  Don Jr. said no information about Clinton was disclosed.

Richard Painter, an ethics lawyer under former President George W. Bush, lambasted Don Jr. for the alleged scheming meeting with the Russian lawyer.

According to Painter on Sunday during an interview on MSNBC, Don Jr.’s actions “border on treason.” He states the following:

“This was an effort to get opposition research on an opponent in an American political campaign from the Russians, who were known to be engaged in spying inside the United States. We do not get our opposition research from spies, we do not collaborate with Russian spies, unless we want to be accused of treason.”

Painter further claims the Bush administration would not have allowed the meeting, and adds:

“If this story is true, we’d have one of them if not both of them in custody by now, and we’d be asking them a lot of questions. This is unacceptable. This borders on treason, if it is not itself treason.”
