House Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a statement condemning Islamophobia on Friday, in response to the mass shooting at two mosques in New Zealand, in which 49 people were slain.

Pelosi wrote, “We mourn the loss of 49 lives cut short in the horrific act of violence in Christchurch, New Zealand. Islamophobia and such acts of pure hatred have no place in a civilized world.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also issued a statement condemning the attack, writing, “The Christchurch terrorist attack by a white supremacist against Muslims in their house of worship is sickening and inhuman. We pray for the victims. We stand with the survivors and the families impacted by this violence.”
