Democratic congressional candidate Jon Ossoff, who is running in a special election for Georgia’s 6th congressional district on Apr. 18, disclosed he has received over $5,000 from Al Jazeera since January 2016.
Al Jazeera is headquartered in Doha, Qatar, and was called a “mouthpiece for terrorists” when it revealed it had “exclusive” Osama bin Laden videos following the Sep. 11, 2001, terror attacks on the United States.
The network is also broadly seen as a propaganda outlet for the Emir of Qatar, who gives funding to the company, as well as terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda, Hamas, and ISIS.
Ossoff’s financial disclosure was released following criticism about his ties to Al Jazeera from both Republicans and Democrats. Both parties questioned his role with the foreign agency, which has both compensated Ossoff and aired films produced by his investigative firm, Insight: The World Investigates (Insight TWI).
When his disclosure was released last week, it was approximately one month overdue. In March, Ron Slotin (D, Ga.), one of Ossoff’s opponents in the Georgia race, said to Ossoff during a Democratic candidate forum:
“You say you’re a small-business owner, but you don’t have a business located in the United States. Every candidate that runs for federal office needs to file a financial statement — you can go in there and look at all my business records, everywhere I get money from, all my assets. Jon, you were supposed to turn in your financial statements February 2 and you didn’t.”
Opponents also argue that Ossoff’s disclosure appears incomplete, noting that Ossoff’s position as CEO of a nonprofit organization named The World Investigates Foundation is not listed. In addition, although his total assets are listed between $1.7 million and $4 million, and his share in Insight TWI is valued between $250,000 and $500,000, he only reports an income of $34,975 from the company.
The Ossoff campaign has not responded to inquiries about compensation from Al Jazeera to Insight TWI.
Before joining Insight TWI, Ossoff was a congressional staffer for Rep. Hank Johnson (D, Ga.), who compared Jewish settlers in Israel to termites at the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Johnson has endorsed Ossoff for the seat.
