Facebook is going even further in their attempt to show the world that it is not “too white or male” by now applying their women-and-ethnic-minority hiring policies to lawyers hired from outside law firms to represent the company in court.
The social media giant has placed what amounts to a quota, requiring at least 33 percent of the legal team they hire be from a pool that excludes male whites. The policy, which went into effect last Saturday, requires the law firm to “actively identify and create clear and measurable leadership opportunities for women and minorities.”
This comes pursuant to backlash that Facebook has received due to its own lack of diversity in the company. Statistics released in 2016 showed that Facebook’s senior leadership was comprised of only three percent black and Hispanic employees. Facebook made an announcement that they would make a concerted effort to improve the numbers by way of recruiting and retention.
Other members of corporate America have adopted the outside law firm diversity plan, such as MetLife and HP.
