Facebook introduces new facial recognition feature

Facebook is implementing new facial recognition capabilities to help users better manage how they appear on the platform. Individuals will receive notifications when their photos appear on Facebook, even when they’re not tagged in the posted photo. The company is utilizing the same algorithms and facial recognition technology it uses to create “tag suggestions,” which recognizes users’ faces in pictures and recommends that they be tagged.

If a user isn’t tagged in a photo, they often have no way of knowing that the picture of them is on Facebook. Now, Facebook will notify users of the photos that they’re in, even when they haven’t received a tag notification.

The feature is being seen as tool in preventing identity fraud. For instance, some users will create fake accounts by using a photo of someone they are attempting to impersonate. Facebook will allow users to know when they are being impersonated.

Facebook notes that the tool won’t notify users of previous photos of them which are already currently on Facebook.
