Despite President Trump convincing Carrier not to move its Indianapolis plant to Mexico, the company is still wacking about 600 jobs this year.

The first wave of cuts is scheduled for July 20, when 338 jobs will be eliminated.

The furnace factory announced this week that they will begin a second round of layoffs just 3 days before Christmas of this year, cutting an estimated 290 jobs on December 22 and moving them to Mexico.

Four supervisor jobs are also being cut in October.

An uproar erupted when Carrier announced in February 2016 that they would be closing their entire factory and moving to Mexico, eliminating almost 1,400 jobs.

In November, the company announced they had “reached a deal” with President-elect Trump to keep close to 1,000 jobs at the plant. Trump said in a December 1 visit to the plant that they were saving 1,100 jobs, but the company later corrected that number to closer to 800.

Included in the original 1,100 estimate were about 300 engineering and administrative jobs which had never been on the slate to move to Mexico to begin with.

Some of the jobs saved were expected to eventually be phased out due to automation.

However, Chuck Jones, president of the United Steelworkers union, said the automation process has not yet been installed.  He expects that to happen early next year.
