Officer Michael Hamill of the Gainesville Police Department gained fame during Hurricane Irma due to his attractive good looks. However, his service on the force is officially over due to anti-Semitic Facebook posts discovered on his personal page.

New York Daily News reports the following:

“Officer Michael Hamill of the Gainesville Police Department, who rose to fame as one of several attractive members of the force during Hurricane Irma, has resigned ahead of two separate internal affairs investigations, Gainesville.com reported.

The police officer, who was sworn in October 2016, was being investigated for posting anti-Semitic sentiments on Facebook.

He was also under investigation for allegedly having sex while on duty, department spokesman Ben Tobias said in a statement obtained by the outlet.

“Both allegations would have been sustained with a possible recommendation of up to termination,” Tobias said.

Hamill resigned from the Gainesville Police Department on Dec. 6, the same date he was scheduled for an Internal Affairs interview.

He was suspended with pay on Sept. 15 as an investigation was launched against him.

Prior to his suspension, two citizens reportedly filed complaints with the department about anti-Semitic posts on Hamill’s personal Facebook profile. The posts were reportedly made before he was hired.

In one of the posts, from April 2011, Hamill complained about people “taking advantage of our system.” As a solution, he suggested that “stupid people” be put in ovens.

“so I find it funny that people will talk about how our government needs to do something about our economy and in reality it’s YOU who needs to stop taking advantage of our system and get a life and do something with your life,” he wrote.

“Gotta love reality when it hits you in the face. Stupid people annoy me. Put them in an oven and deal with them the Hitler way. Haha.”

Two years later Hamill posted a Facebook status about “reading jewish jokes before I go to bed,” adding that it boosted his self-esteem.

“Who knew that reading jewish jokes before I go to bed would not only make me feel better about myself but also help me sleep better as well. Here is one for everybody, ‘What’s the difference between boy scouts and jews? Anybody know? Well it is because, ‘Boy scouts come back from their camps.'”

One Internal Affairs report, obtained by Gainesville.com, stated that “the offensive nature of these posts directly affected Officer Hamill’s ability to interact with citizens of the community and reflect poorly on the Gainesville Police Department.”

Tobias revealed plans to combat anti-Semitism in the Gainesville Police Department.

From now on, all new recruits will tour the Florida Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg before being sworn in.

As for allegations Hamill engaged in sexual relations while on duty, Gainesville.com reported that a second report from the department’s Internal Affairs office found four dates between February and April 2017 when Hamill visited a woman while on duty.

Evidence showed that he had, in fact, been intimate with her during work hours.

The woman claimed she and Hamill first met while he was driving her home as an Uber driver, which is in violation of the Gainesville Police Department’s general order about employment outside of the line of duty.”
