Father who beat 2-day-old daughter to death killed in jail

Another inmate is charged with murder after the body of baby-killer Liam Deane, 22, was found in a British prison on Sunday.

Deane was serving a life sentence for beating his 2-day-old baby to death. He was found dead in his prison cell at HMP Leeds Sunday, apparently killed by another prisoner, The Yorkshire Evening Post reported.

Deane reportedly punched, shook and squeezed his 2-day-old daughter to death last July. He did admit to killing his 2-day-old daughter, Luna, after the baby would not stop crying. He was handed a life sentence last month and would serve a minimum of 10 years.

Deane was supposed to be watching Luna while her mother went to sleep at their home in Wakefield, England. The baby was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where she died on July 14 in intensive care after suffering “catastrophic brain injuries.”

Michael Smith, prosecuting during Deane’s trial, said the baby had injuries to her brain, body and face. “He said he was responsible for all of the injuries that she had suffered and he said that Luna had not settled down and he lost control,” according to Smith.

Deane broke down when interviewed by police and admitted he was responsible for attacking the baby.

A victim statement read to the court on behalf of Luna’s mother said, “Seeing Luna on life support in the hospital will last with me forever. I can’t describe how that felt. I would not wish it upon my worst enemy.”

Deane had no prior convictions, the paper reported.

John Westland, 28, appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court, flanked by two police officers and a member of the court escort staff.

Now charged with Deane’s murder, Westland remains in custody. It is unclear why he was serving time in the first place.

Westland’s case is being sent to Leeds Crown Court due to the serious nature of the offense. His hearing will take place Thursday, The Sun reported.
