Female Republican to vie for Franken’s Senate seat (VIDEO)

The first Republican aiming to fill Sen. Al Franken’s vacated U.S. Senate seat in Minnesota is Karin Housely (R). On Tuesday, she launched a bid to enter the special election race to replace the Democratic lawmaker, who will be leaving his post in the coming weeks.

Housley is currently a member of the Minnesota state Senate, and works as a real estate agent, according to Twin Cities.com.

The Republican Senate-hopeful posted a video on Twitter that highlights her deep roots in the state, as the daughter of Minnesota school teachers.

“I’m Karin Housely and I’m running for U.S. Senate,” she says in the video. “You might be asking yourself — why would anyone want to go to Washington right now and be part of that dysfunction they call Congress? Actually, I can’t think of any place in this country more in need of someone like me right now.”

Housely goes on to declare her interest in protecting small businesses, veterans, senior citizens and “the unborn.” She says she plans to “work hard, play fair, and do the right thing.”

Franken announced his pending resignation in early December after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct drew ire from his colleagues in the Senate and many Democrats pressured him to step aside. Some, including DML News CEO Dennis Michael Lynch, believe Democrats “sacrificed” Franken in order to prove they are the party of zero tolerance for sexual abuse — even if those allegations are unproven or have no merit.

Franken is expected to officially leave his seat in January.

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton (D) has named Lt. Gov. Tina Smith (D) to fill Franken’s spot on an interim basis, and she will also run in the special election.
