On January 13 in the Nigerian town of Madagali, two women detonated suicide bombs that were hidden underneath babies they were carrying.
The bomb killed the women, their two babies, and four villagers. Following the incident, Nigerian authorities are issuing warnings about female suicide bombers, possibly associated with terrorist group Boko Haram, using their babies as covers over the devices.
The two women who detonated their bombs had passed a security checkpoint, where authorities mistook the terrorists for motherly civilians and allowed them access into the town.
Boko Haram has been known to use young girls as suicide bombers. In December of 2015, two female suicide attackers killed 50 people in the same town. Now, with women using babies as covers, authorities warn this tactic could become a “dangerous” trend.
The terrorist organization has been at war with the Nigerian government over reclaiming territory in the Adamawa State.
