When President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday night, he released a statement saying it was “essential” to restoring “public trust and confidence in its vital law enforcement mission.”
Fired U.S. attorney Preet Bharara took to Twitter to see if others shared his belief that President Trump’s reasoning was some kind of a cover-up.
“Whatever one’s opinion of Comey, does anyone still believe that the STATED reason for Comey’s firing was the ACTUAL reason?” Bharara tweeted. “Anyone?”

Previously an Obama-appointed U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, Bharara was fired by President Trump in March after refusing to resign.
The responses to his tweet were overwhelmingly against Trump.
