Firefighters responded to a fire at the America’s Best Value Inn hotel in Lawrence, Kansas just before noon Monday, and have battled the massive fire for the entire remainder of the day, as flames engulfed the three-story, wooden structure, eventually collapsing much of the building.
WIBW News reported that one firefighter fell through the roof while initially battling the fire, but was not hurt.
The weather is below freezing (8 degrees as of 7:30 pm CST), and the water is turning to ice, creating even more hazardous conditions. The firefighters have reportedly had to work in shifts, due to the extreme weather conditions.
Everyone inside the hotel was able to escape unharmed, but the building is a complete loss.
The cause of the fire is still to be determined.
