Children at the Stanford Elementary School in Oroville, California got a surprise when they went out for recess Tuesday, and discovered it had literally rained fish.

Dead fish were everywhere – all over the playground, in drinking fountains, even up on the roof.  The whole campus with littered with dead fish.

At first school officials were bewildered trying to figure out who had played such a mean prank on them.

Then they learned that indeed, it had rained fish, as thunderstorms and water spouts can pick up fish from shallow bodies of water and rain them down a distance away.

A fish hatchery exists about one-half mile away from the school, and weather officials are suspecting that a strong wind or small thunderstorm must have sucked up a batch of the fish from the water and rained them down upon the school.
