Fla. man paralyzed after falling through roof for chasing a monkey that stole his Steelers hat in Indonesia

Destin, Florida citizen Jeff Swedenhjelm was left paralyzed after he fell through a roof in Indonesia while chasing a monkey that stole his favorite Pittsburgh Steelers hat.

Swedenhjelm fell from a 33 foot-high roof in Uluwatu on the island of Bali while chasing the monkey Monday, who stole his hat earlier in the week. Swedenhjelm’s family is now asking for donations to fly him out of Bali so he can see a surgeon capable of fixing his severely broken spinal cord.

“I am hopeful that the time we shared on his wonderful planet has given me enough love and respect in your heart to make you want to help,” Swedenhjelm’s family posted to a GoFundMe page on his behalf. “I have never been the one to ask for help, especially in monetary form, but any help will be taken to heart. Time is of the essence here as we are advised the longer we leave it the less likely he is to recover or even walk again.”

As of Sunday afternoon, Swedenhjelm’s relatives had collected nearly $58,000, with the hopes of reaching $60,000 to get him on a helicopter to see a spinal surgeon in Taiwan, Singapore or Malaysia. They estimate that Swedenhjelm’s medical and rehabilitation expenses will total $100,000.
