Flight Attendant Saves Child from Human Trafficker During Flight

Human trafficking has been a growing problem in the United States for years.

One mode of transportation human traffickers use to move their captive teens around the country is air travel.

A flight attendant who attended a training course years ago on how to spot these victims of human trafficking used the skills learned to rescue a girl from her captor after she spotted an unkempt-looking teen with an impeccably dressed man on a flight together.

Shiela Fedrick, 49, of Alabama, tells the story about how she recognized the girl as a possible victim of trafficking.

Fedrick was working as a flight attendant on an Alaskan Airlines flight from Seattle to San Francisco when said she noticed the girl had “greasy blonde hair” and looked like she “had been through pure hell,” sitting next to a well-dressed man.

When Fedrick tried to start a conversation with the passengers, the girl refused to speak, leaving the conversation to the man.

Recalling the training she had learned in flight attendant school where around one hundred attendants took a seminar on how to spot human trafficking situation, Fredrick decided to leave the girl a note in the bathroom.

“She wrote on the note she needed help,” Fedrick said, prompting her to alert the pilot who then contacted authorities.

Police officers arrested the man when the plane arrived in San Francisco.

“I’ve been a flight attendant for ten years and, it’s like, I am going all the way back to when I was in training and I was…, like, I could have seen these young girls and young boys and didn’t even know,'”Fredrick told WTSP.

Fedrick has kept in touch with the rescued girl, who is now in college.
