A Florida skydiver committed suicide Tuesday by purposely failing to deploy his parachute, according to authorities. The skydiver, 27-year-old Capotorto Vitantonio jumped from a plane moments after sending his wife a video, informing her of his intent.
Authorities say Vitantonio’s wife received a message from her husband, indicating he wasn’t going to pull his parachute cord.
In their incident report released Friday, the DeLand Police Department says Vitantonio’s wife, Costansa Zitellini, went into the Sky Dive DeLand after she received the video, asking an employee to prevent her husband from jumping. Although the employee contacted the plane, Vitantonio had already made his jump.
Sky Dive DeLand’s general manager, Mike Johnston, said Zitellini arrived only “moments too late.”
An experienced jumper of Italian birth, he was located face down in a field, southeast of the runways at DeLand Municipal Airport.
In the video message Zitellini received from her husband, he told her he would be heading “somewhere wonderful.”
