Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey believes citizens should be armed and ready to defend themselves given the increase in instances of gun violence in the Orlando area.
“Folks, now more than ever is the time for our citizens to be prepared to serve as the first line of defense, not only for them, but for their families,” Sheriff Ivey said, according to a Fox News report.
Following incidents at the Ft. Lauderdale International Airport and Pulse Night Club in Orlando Ivey warned attacks can happen anywhere at anytime.
“What’s next is to fully understand that this is war, and you better be prepared to wage war to protect you, your family, and those around you if attacked,” he said.
He notes that the attackers expect people to run and hide, as opposed to fighting back.
His message is a powerful one, but has received mixed responses. Some believe it to be inspiring while others think it will cause more violence than it prevents.
