Flying pigs used to block TRUMP

In an homage to Pink Floyd’s Animals album, and layered with a host of other significant meanings, architect Jeffrey Roberts of New World Design Ltd (NWD) wants to obscure the Trump name on his Chicago hotel with a one-day art installation of flying golden pigs.

Roberts calls the project “Flying Pigs on Parade: A Chicago River Folly” to denote that Trump’s unlikely presidency is a “when pigs fly” sort of situation. His goal, which was stated on a GoFundMe page, is to “provide visual relief to the citizens of Chicago by interrupting the view of the ostentatious Trump Tower Chicago sign.”

According to a report in Heatstreet, the 20’ tall Trump sign has been controversial since it was erected on Trump’s building in 2014.

City officials have reportedly approved Roberts’ project, which he says will most likely take flight this summer.

According to Roberts, the art installation would be “comprised of four gold-colored helium balloon pigs (Old Major, Napoleon, Squealer and Minimus) tethered in the Chicago River. The references are many, from flying pigs and Miss Piggy comments to a taste for gold embellished interiors. Ultimately, this is a very rational design and is in direct contrast to the chaotic nature and bizarre antics of our current leadership.”

Roberts noted that he has heard from Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters, who has given his blessing to recreate the image of a yellow pig floating atop London’s Battersea Power Station on the cover of the band’s 1977 Animals album.

Roberts is seeking $250,000 to pay for the pigs, noting that the project has a variety of technical challenges. In addition, he plans to take the “flying pig parade” to other cities across the country.

“We are designers creating visual commentary on the ridiculous nature of our current political environment,” said Roberts, noting that his group is not comprised of “radicals or activists.”

“We see design as our path to reinforcing a sensible community,” he added. “The project is a bold visual response to the loud, illogical and frequently hateful expressions that engulfed the elections and now define the activities of U.S. leadership. We see this folly as a gesture in support of those of more rational, optimistic and inclusive minds. We are proud and rational Americans.”
