Dubai will be the first location to introduce the e-VTOL, which is an electric air taxi expected to make its debut within a few months in the chic United Arab Emirates city.

Prototypes of the air transportation are already being flight-tested and major corporations are investing billions of dollars into the project.

The e-VTOL acronym stands for ““electric vertical take-off and landing” and the idea seems like a great fit for Uber, which will be hosting the first “Elevate Summit” event this month in Dallas. At the summit, the rent-a-ride giant will be alongside e-VTOL developers and investors, discussing the new concept and its possible implementation.

Nikhil Goel, the product manager at Advanced Programs & Uber Elevate, believes that e-VTOLs can be up and running for his company within a decade, though a firmer timeline will be ascertained at the summit.

The concept behind e-VTOL is based on hobby drones, such as the quadcopter, and is considered a better option than a helicopter. It will be electric, meaning that it will be much quieter and cheaper to manufacture, and will lack the operational emissions that a chopper requires.

It will be battery operated and run for 30 minutes, with a tablet-type device in the dashboard that will allow the passenger to enter his or her destination.

The Chinese-built EHang 184 Autonomous Aerial Vehicle model will begin flying air taxi trips in Dubai this July.
