President Barack Obama got a rude awakening from Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte at the G-20 Summit this past weekend. The controversial political figure called the U.S. president a “son of a bitch” after Duterte demanded that Obama be respectful during the international meeting.
“[Obama you] son of a whore, I will swear at you in that forum,” was the direct quote that came from Duterte after complex talks about his country’s violent war on the drug cartels unfolded.
Despite 2,400 people being killed in these violent clashes, Obama is now offended and may cancel a scheduled meeting with Duterte. “What I’ve instructed my team to do is to talk to their Philippine counterparts to find out is this in fact a time when we can have constructive, productive conversations,” he said, describing Duterte as a “colorful” leader.
“I have seen some of those colorful statements in the past so clearly he’s a colorful guy,” Obama replied to AP reporters, after he was asked about the distasteful comments during a press conference in China at the G-20 summit. Obama reassured the United States would “always assert” the need for due process in prosecution of drug criminals, despite Duterte’s comments toward him.
