A new book by Donna Brazile, former interim chair of the Democratic National Committee, is blowing the lid off what really happened prior to the 2016 presidential election: Hillary Clinton’s campaign took over the DNC months before she had the Party’s official nomination, which was apparently rigged against Sen. Bernie Sanders.
In her bombshell book, Brazile writes about her discovery of the financial chaos that had taken place within the DNC under the leadership of Debbie Wasserman Schultz prior to her ouster in July.
Politico featured an excerpt from Brazile’s book, “Hacks: The Inside Story of the Break-ins and Breakdowns that Put Donald Trump in the White House,” which comes out Nov. 7. In it, Brazile describes how she discovered that the Clinton campaign was actually keeping the DNC financially afloat.
Brazile explains in the excerpt that she had made a promise to Sanders that she would “get to the bottom of whether Hillary Clinton’s team had rigged the nomination process,” and what she discovered was beyond disturbing.
Upon taking over as the Party’s interim chair, Brazile quickly learned that Wasserman Schultz had allowed the DNC’s spending to get out of control. In her efforts to stop the bleeding, she made a deal with Clinton’s campaign “to sustain the DNC,” according to the Clinton campaign’s chief financial officer, Gary Gensler.
Clinton’s campaign “had the DNC on life support, giving it money every month to meet its basic expenses, while the campaign was using the party as a fund-raising clearinghouse,” she reveals, noting, “Under FEC law, an individual can contribute a maximum of $2,700 directly to a presidential campaign. But the limits are much higher for contributions to state parties and a party’s national committee.
Brazile goes on to say, “Individuals who had maxed out their $2,700 contribution limit to the campaign could write an additional check for $353,400 to the Hillary Victory Fund.”
The moment she realized the dirty truth, Brazile recalls telling Gensler: “That victory fund was supposed to be for whoever was the nominee, and the state party races. You’re telling me that Hillary has been controlling it since before she got the nomination?”
Claiming that this was not illegal, but highly “unethical,” Brazile says there was a Joint Fund-Raising agreement between the DNC, the Hillary Victory Fund, and Hillary for America. It specified that “in exchange for raising money and investing in the DNC, Hillary would control the party’s finances, strategy, and all the money raised. Her campaign had the right of refusal of who would be the party communications director, and it would make final decisions on all the other staff. The DNC also was required to consult with the campaign about all other staffing, budgeting, data, analytics, and mailings.”
Brazile recalls how she told Sanders the truth and “urged Bernie to work as hard as he could to bring his supporters into the fold with Hillary, and to campaign with all the heart and hope he could muster,” which he apparently did.
