Former South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint would find it “very disappointing” if Attorney General Jeff Sessions were to leave his position in the Trump administration. During an interview with The Daily Caller News Foundation Tuesday, DeMint said he hopes the administration doesn’t start “disintegrating” under pressure.

After President Trump lashed out publicly against Sessions‘ decision to recuse himself from the Russia investigation, many conservatives including Dennis Michael Lynch expressed their distaste for the remarks. DML said “Sessions is loyal and an asset, as well as the one guy who is actually getting things done” in the administration.

In the Tuesday interview, DeMint said, “It would be very disappointing if Sessions left.” He said he could understand Trump’s “frustrations” after Sessions’ recusal, and because “this Russian thing continues to go on.”

“But the media is going to continue to hammer Trump, and if it’s not Russia, they will make up another scandal of some kind,” DeMint said. “Everyone is firing at the administration. But I hope that they don’t start disintegrating by beginning to take out each other.”

Earlier today, the president made additional comments about Sessions during a joint press conference with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri. He said he remains disappointed in Sessions, but would not comment on the attorney general’s future.

DeMint is speaking out Tuesday as he promotes a new group he’s launched: The Conservative Partnership Institute. The group intends to help support conservative leadership in Washington.

DeMint spent the past few years as the head of the highly conservative Heritage Foundation.  Heritage is a DC based think-tank with tremendous influence.
