Former Military Commanders Sign Climate Change Documents

President Obama has often made the statement that there is “no greater threat to the future than climate change.”

Now retired top U.S. military officers and former national security officials have endorsed the concept that climate change could jeopardize U.S. military operations and increase the threat of international conflict, reports Reuters.

A document released Wednesday by the Center for Climate and Security said, “There are few easy answers, but one thing is clear: the current trajectory of climate change presents a strategically-significant risk to U.S. national security, and inaction is not a viable option.”

The document called on the next president to “create a cabinet level position to deal with climate change and its impact on national security.”   Over a dozen former military and national security leaders signed the document.

Another report also published on Wednesday by the same group said, “The complex relationship between sea level rise, storm surge and global readiness and responsiveness must be explored down to the operational level, across the Services and Joint forces, and up to a strategic level as well.”

A third report a few months ago said tidal flooding could be a daily occurrence in some areas, due to the sea level rising.

Francesco Femia, the president and co-founder of the Center for Climate and Security organization, is hoping that by getting so many former top officials to sign the reports, it will put more pressure on the next presidential administration to “place greater emphasis and dedicate more resources to combat climate change.”

Terrorism, immigration, trade, foreign policy and the economy have been more the focus of the 2016 presidential campaign, than global warming.

Reuters reports:

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has said that global warming is a concept “created by the and for the Chinese” to hurt U.S. business.

Democrat Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, has advocated shifting the country to 50 percent clean energy by 2030 and promised heavy regulation of fracking.
