A liberal donor club seeking to ramp up funds from deep-pocket donors in their effort to finance efforts against President Trump has added an experienced new member to their team.
Their new highly-prized hire is Archana Sahgal, a former Obama White House aide, and a former program officer for George Soros.
Democracy Alliance president Gara LaMarche made the announcement in a press release published on Politico Monday:
“The Democracy Alliance announced the hire of former White House Public Engagement Senior Associate Director Archana Sahgal. This move is an indication of the Democracy Alliance’s commitment to resisting President Trump’s anti-progressive agenda through increased attention to progressive organizations leading the fight to protect and advance policies that give all Americans the chance to succeed. In her new role with the Democracy Alliance, Sahgal will help build out a new hub of information, working closely with Democracy Alliance Partners and progressive organizations.”
According to Sahgal’s LinkedIn page, and the DA press release, she went straight from a long-time stint with George Soros, to serving in the Obama administration.
Sahgal’s LinkedIn page states that she was a “Program Officer” for George Soros’ Open Society Foundations from October 2010 to January 2015.
The DA press release states that she “led significant programs at the Open Society Foundation, the Color of Democracy Fund, and the Civic Engagement Fund for Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim and South Asian Communities.”
Soon after Sahgal left the Open Society Foundations, the Obama administration scooped her up – first with the U.S. Department of Commerce from June 2015 to August 2016, then she went to the White House in August 2016 as a Senior Associate Director for the Office of Public Engagement.
The strategy behind the DA hiring Sahgal is to “align donors around a set of strategic plans and priorities, with a focus on the 2017, 2018 and 2020 elections, and redistricting,” states the press release.
The Free Beacon reported that LaMarche said regarding the hire, “She knows what both donors and the movement needs, and I can’t think of anyone better to help us rise to this moment of strategic resistance.”
Free Beacon further reported that “in 2014 Sahgal oversaw grants totaling as much as $4.3 million designed to push federal reform efforts, support Obama executive actions designed to limit deportations, and develop “humane” federal immigration enforcement policies.”
She has extensive experience in working with wealthy philanthropic leaders, and the Democracy Alliance is expecting her to grow their donor base.
